John Mitchell Nye was born the eldest son of Bill Orup Nye and Ruth Ann Mitchell Nye in Toledo, OH on January 21, 1958. John was raised in Toledo and Merriam, KS, graduating from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1976. During his high school years John also resided in Minneapolis, MN where he was active in Young Life Ministries. Upon graduation John attended DeVry Institute in Kansas City. John was on staff with the NCAA-National Collegiate Athletic Assocation in Overland Park, KS. In addition, John had worked as a journeyman painter. In 1982 John married his beloved wife Karen. John and Karen welcomed one son to their family in 1986, Taylor Michel Nye. John and his family attended Full Faith Church of Love in Shawnee, KS. John was diagnosed with colon cancer in April, 1989. He passed away just four months later in August of that year. His funeral services were held at the Amos Family Funeral Chapel in Shawnee, KS. He was interred at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, KS near his paternal grandparents.
John was a very active young man who enjoyed the outdoors, weight-training and motorcycling. Most important to him were his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, his wife Karen, and his son Taylor.
In addition to cancer, John battled diabetes from the age of 3. His legacy is his son, Taylor Michel Nye. Through all his battles with illness John never complained. His doctors and nurses were moved by his quiet and gentle spirit. His love of Christ and God's Holy Word will not be forgotten. John was instrumental in seeing both his parents come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
John is survived by his wife, Karen and son, Taylor; his mother and father, Bill and Ruth; his sister and her husband, Julie and Richard and his nephew and namesake, Johnny.
