Sherry Camargo (Amundson)

Birth Date: 1958-12-26
Graduation year: 1976
Deceased Date: 2021-03-28
Obituary:
Dear family and friends, it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to Sherry Camargo. She was my sister but to others in life, she was a wife, mom, daughter, family member, and friend. And for all of us who loved her, she will be deeply missed.

Sherry loved life, lived it to the fullest extent she could, and always found beauty and joy in each day despite the health issues that tried to hold her back. She loved her family deeply and would share all she had with anyone in need. We love her and will miss her until we are reunited again.

Many have asked about a memorial, or what they can do to help so I've set up this memorial fund as a way for people to help her family. Please don't feel any obligation but if you would like to give in memory and celebration of Sherry's life, please consider a small donation to assist her family as they work through this difficult time. All funds given will go to benefit the Camargo family.

Thank you to each one of you for your love and support of Sherry and the entire Camargo family. Please feel free to leave a comment or a loving memory for the family if you like.

In love and memory of my sister,
Eric Amundson

James William Brown

Birth Date: 1958-09-22
Deceased Date: 1982-11-20
Obituary:
An Overland Park man was killed and two other men were injured Saturday morning when their single-engine plane struck power lines and plunged into the Kaw River near Wamego, KS., authorities said.

James William Brown, 24, of 9913 Perry Drive, was flying the plane from Manhattan to Topeka, where the three men apparently had planned to sky-dive.

Mr. Brown, a senior at Kansas State University, had been a sky-diving instructor for about a year and spent most Saturdays teaching his hobby to other members of K-State's parachute club, said his mother, Virginia Brown.

One of the passengers, Dale E, Wheeler, also is a student at K-State, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The 23-year-old Caledonia, Ill., man suffered a back injury and was taken to stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in 'Topeka, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

He was undergoing surgery for spinal injuries late Saturday.

The passenger, Joe Giampietro, 24, is a member of the military and is stationed at Fort Riley, state troopers said. He suffered injuries to his right foot and ankle and was taken to Irwin Hospital at Fort Riley. His condition was not released.

Kent Dean, a Kansas trooper, said the Cessna 172 hit electrical power lines about a half-mile west of the Kansas River Bridge and crashed into the river about 9am. The men had rented the plane from Capitol Air Service Inc. of Manhattan, he said.

Mr. Giampietro was able to free himself from the wreckage of the submerged plane and walk to the riverbank, Mr. Dean said. Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Brown who was dead at the scene had to be cut from the wreckage, he said.

Wamego, a town of 2,994, is 14 miles east of Manhattan and about 100 miles west of Kansas City.

Mrs. Brown said the family had received only sketchy information about the crash, but she said she believed it was a "freak accident."

"It had to have been. He was studying electrical engineering, he knew about power lines and would have taken all the right precautions."

Sky diving had been her son's hobby for several years, Mrs. Brown said.

"He loved it," she said, "and he loved flying."

Mr. Brown, who was born in Larned, KS, leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Brown of the home; a sister, Miss Janie Lee Brown, Lawrence, KS; and his fraternal grandmother, Mrs. Georgia Brown, Harrisonville, MO.

Services will be at 2pm Tuesday at the McGilley and Hoge Chapel. Friends may call from 7 to 9pm Monday at the chapel.

Ellen Jane Weeks (Farber)

Birth Date: 1958-06-09
Graduation year: 1976
Deceased Date: 2022-10-11
Obituary:
Ellen Jane (Farber) Weeks

June 9, 1958 — October 11, 2022

Ellen Jane (Farber) Weeks, 64 of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on October 11, 2022, surrounded by family after a short, but courageous battle with cancer.

Ellen, the youngest of four, was born June 9, 1958, in New York to Thomas & Doris Farber. Throughout her childhood, her father’s job relocated the family numerous times before settling in Kansas City where she graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest in 1976. Ellen married Donald “Don” Weeks and they raised their son, Christopher in the Kansas City Metro. After Don’s passing, Ellen met the second love of her life, James “Jim” Komosa.

Ellen’s love of life was unmatched. She thrived on being around others while others were drawn to her and her infectious personality (and laugh). Whether she was serving in her community, participating in horse shows or trail rides, or just at the local store, Ellen seemed to make new friends wherever she went. She had a passion for trying new things and living in the moment, whether that was attending concerts with Chris, riding ATVs with Jim in Colorado, trying new restaurants, or viewing Maui with her family via helicopter; she aimed to live her life to the fullest.

Besides Ellen’s passion for life and family, she loved all things animals. From cats and dogs to chickens, donkeys, and horses, she had owned and cared for them all. This love was insurmountable, especially with Jessie, her horse of 18 years.

While her life journey didn’t go as planned, the journey took her on one heck of a ride.

Ellen is survived by her son, Chris, daughter-in-law Mandy, and grandchildren Landon & Kylie Weeks of Overland Park, KS; Jim Komosa of Overland Park, KS; siblings Thomas Farber (Gayle) of Evergreen, CO, Susan Bretz (Ben) of Phoenixville, PA, and Diane Lutz of Kansas City, brother-in-law Bob Weeks (Linda) of Prairie Village, KS, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Don Weeks; parents Thomas & Doris Farber; and father- and mother-in-law William and Frances Weeks.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th Street (47th & Jefferson), Kansas City, MO 64112. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to an animal rescue that is close to your heart.

Kevin was the youngest of 8 born on January 6, 1958, to the late Joseph and Constance Fern in Kansas City Kansas.

He spent his childhood years attending school at St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1976. After high school he continued his education at the University of Kansas. This is where Kevin found his passion for politics and partying.

After college Kevin worked for the 40th Governor of Kansas, John W. Carlin. His mother was so proud of her youngest son. In the many years to follow Kevin worked on several well-known campaigns. He was a campaign manager, consultant, recruiter, advisor, fundraiser and a savant politician. He then spent 15 years in the hospitality industry working as manager of local Kansas City hotels.

Although he moved away, Shawnee was always home. Anyone that knew him felt his passion for his hometown.

In 2008 he returned to Shawnee in what most would call his dream job as Executive Director of Visit Shawnee. He had numerous accomplishments in his role but one that stood out was his hand in the improvements of the Mid-America Sport complex. This was all a part of his plan “to get heads in beds”.

One of his true joys of a job that he loved was all the family-friendly events that he and the city of Shawnee created. He had an amazing group of volunteers and friends through the years who in his own words “have done a lot of balloons and put up with my obsessive/compulsive nature in running things”.

On any given Friday you could find him on the patio at Jake’s Place laughing it up with his dearest friends after work.

He served as a volunteer and sponsorship chair for Old Shawnee Days, served on the Board for the Friends of Shawnee Town, was a founding member of the Johnson County Irish American Club and Past President of the Irish Club, Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, awarded Irishman of the year, served on the City of Shawnee Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Shawnee Great Grillers State Championship Barbeque committee, served as President of Travel Industry Association of Kansas, member of the Shawnee Sister City Committee, current Commissioner on the Johnson County Park and Recreation District Board, member of the Governor’s Council on Tourism, and most recently a recipient of the Governor’s Tourism Award.

On November 15th, 2022, he retired from a job that he loved in a community that he treasured.

The current Mayor of Shawnee, Michelle Distler Proclaimed October 6, 2022 “Kevin Fern Day” and he was gifted the Key to the City of Shawnee.

He never missed a holiday with his family and would always be the first one to get a good old-fashioned poker game going. He was the life of the party and always liked to stir things up a bit.

Kevin is survived by his brother, James Fern; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Fern and Debbie Fern; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Connie Jo Hays; Patsy Meyer; Mary Fern and three brothers, Joseph Fern, Michael Fern and John Fern.

Rosary at 5 p.m. on Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Following the burial, the family would like to invite everyone to a luncheon at the Shawnee Town Hall.

I had no idea that Denise had passed until I found it on the "Memorials Page" today 8/31/2022. We were just really good friends in high school. Very much remember what a sweet and kind person she was and how we enjoyed listened to music. I remember one of her favorites as well, "The Joker" by The Steve Miller Band, and anything by Paul McCartney and Wings. Im sure she is missed by many. Really breaks my heart knowing she's gone. Probably the nicest person I've ever met in my life. Rest In Peace Denise

Donald “Randy” Hook

Birth Date: 1958-03-09
Deceased Date: 2021-06-18
Obituary:
Donald R. Hook, age 63, died on June 18, 2021. Donald was born on March 9, 1958, in Kansas City, Missouri to Edward Robert and Delilah Jane Hook. He graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1976. He worked as a stone mason for over 25 years, and then went on to be a low voltage technician for 10 years.

Donald loved to hunt, camp, and ride motorcycles. He always had a knife on him and could sharpen it to a razor edge! He loved reading and watching western movies. He was especially fond of his grandchildren.

When you saw him, he was always in cowboy boots, jeans, and a western shirt to be completed with a vest, when he wanted to dress up. He had a rough exterior, but was soft on the inside. He would do anything for anyone, no matter the cost, and was always the first to lend a hand. He lived in the moment. He loved his 3 sons - even though at times he wasn't always present, we never questioned his love for us. He was a deeply sentimental man and it showed by all the things he held on to. One thing is for sure, he was all about having a good time!

Donald is survived by his children Chris Hook (Amy Hook) of Shawnee, KS, Michael Hook of Kansas City, KS, Ryan Hook of Overland Park, KS; three granddaughters Aubrey, Kylee and Lilah Hook. He is also survived by his brothers Clyde Edward, and Terry James Hook. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Delilah Hook, and brother Robert Lee Hook.

He is being cremated and a Celebration of Life will be on July 17th, 2021 at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Operation Underground Railground (my.ourrescue.org) or to the family via Venmo (@Chris-Hook-56).

Steve J. Kiriakos

Birth Date: 1957-12-11
Deceased Date: 2020-10-08
Obituary:

Stephen James Kiriakos, born on December 11, 1957, in Kansas City, Missouri, went to be with The Lord on October 8, 2020.  His parents were Mayhue 'Mike' Kiriakos and Shirley Blanche Sowell Kiriakos, both deceased.

Steve was a 1976 graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Shawnee, Kansas, a 1980 graduate of The University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, and a 2006 graduate of Athens Technical College.  For many years he was a Special Markets Sales Manager for Sierra, Inc., a marine parts company in Litchfield, Illinois, covering the southeast region of the United States.  Steve then became the first Recreation and Outreach Director for The ROC at First Baptist Church in Elberton, Georgia; an Instructor for the Commercial Truck Driving Program at Athens Technical College - Elbert County Campus; a Regional/Local Driver for Superior Carriers, Inc., in Morrow, Georgia; and fulfilled his entrepreneurial spirit by building handcrafted outdoor furniture as Cross Wood Products and open fire grills as Frontier Cooker.

Through the years Steve has had many great experiences: riding great Yamaha and Kawasaki touring bikes, skydiving (he said once was enough), floating in the Goodyear blimp (that he did multiple times),  hiking to the top of Longs Peak in Colorado (elevation 14,259), backpacking parts of the Appalachian Trail, riding in the Bike Ride Across Georgia (Atlanta to Savannah), and playing signature golf courses across the U.S.

Most important to Steve was spending time with his 'lovely bride, Miss Amanda', studying The Word and spending time with other Believers, and talking on the phone with family and friends.

In 2001 he was thrown from a vehicle and spent months in bed recovering.  In 2018 he completed surgery, chemo and radiation for cancer in his throat.  January 2020 he was diagnosed with the same type of cancer, but in his liver this time.  Through it all he had a wonderful attitude, praising and thanking the Lord for His divine blessings and loving care.

Steve leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Laurie Amanda Cromer Kiriakos; sisters, Marsha (Steve) Ruse (Overland Park, KS) and Susan Kiriakos (Gallatin, MO); in-laws, Neal and Ellen Cromer (Elberton, GA); sister-in-law, Mel (Doug) Jackson (Milledgeville, GA); and nieces and nephews: Kevin (Andrea) Ruse (Lone Jack, MO), Amy (Baldwin) Cheung (Shawnee, KS), Lauren Jackson, Clay Jackson, and Sara Jackson (all of Milledgeville, GA).  Also, he will be missed by all the participants of the weekly Bible Study held at the Kiriakos home: Amanda, Neal, Bob, Gay, Roland, Linda, Rick, Chris, Lucinda, Ron, and Molly, along with all the guys who came for the Friday Night Fires at Kamp Kiriakos.

A big thank you to the staff at Compassionate Care Hospice and Walmart Pharmacy for working together to make his last weeks comfortable.

An outdoor visitation will be held from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm on Tuesday, October 13, at the family home, 1388 Brown Brothers Road, Elberton, GA.  Burial will be in Latimer Cemetery Calhoun Falls, SC

Steven August Maeder

Birth Date: 1958-01-04
Deceased Date: 2009-09-18
Obituary:
Steven August Maeder, 51, Merriam, Kansas, died September 18, 2009.

” Butch” was his nickname, and it described his powerful appearance, his deep voice, and his hobbies. Afterall, Steve was a man’s man. He hunted deer, turkey, and pheasant and also  fished.  He was great with his hands and built all kinds of things from barbeque smokers to skeet-throwers.  He was a man.  Take him for all in all, we shall not look upon his like again.

Although “Butch” perfectly described Steve’s appearance and hobbies, it did not even hint as to what kind of man he was on the inside.  So we were forced to give him other names, as well.

For the countless number of lives he touched, he was called Friend. For the nieces and nephews he helped in every way he could, he was called Uncle.  To the three women he grew up with, and teased, and was teased by, he was called Brother. For Tanner and Jake, two strong and affectionate, young men, he was called Dad.  And for Robin, the only woman he would ever truly love, he was called Husband.

Although he is no longer here with us, the love he left behind will last forever.

Steven is survived by his wife, Robin; two sons, Tanner and Jake; sisters Vicky Renne (Dan), Cathy Kline (Jim) and Kelly Coffman (Ken); father-in-law, David Lang, and ten nephews and nieces. Steven was preceeded in death by his parents Doris and Albert Maeder; nephew Jimmy; and mother-in-law Leonore Lang.

Visitation is Tuesday, September 22, 6-8 p.m., at Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee.  Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Missouri 64145.
